Equipping the Board to Achieve Organisational Change in a Competitive Market

Background

The Managing Director of a construction firm was aware that increasing market competition was placing new demands on the business and requiring enhanced commercial and people skills from its people. Historically the business had invested in technical as opposed to commercial or people skills development.

Our Approach

As a first stage in the change process, Human Qualities implemented a skills and training needs audit of the Board and senior managers. The audit process was designed to be as objective and rigorous as possible, based around the competencies required for business success. Buy-in from the directors was achieved through briefing workshops where objectives and parameters were agreed. The audit process involved each individual completing a range of psychometric and simulation exercises, plus a competency based interview. These were assessed by a Human Qualities consultant, and feedback provided both face-to-face and in the form of a written report. This provided each individual and the Managing Director with a clear understanding of their strengths and development needs. External benchmarking of the psychometrics and a review of group trends also provided the business with an enhanced understanding of how the senior team were positioned to drive business success.

Impact

A series of individual and group training initiatives has since been rolled out to enhance areas identified as requiring development, putting the organisation in a strong position to capitalise on market opportunities.
